Can You Discuss the Pros and Cons of Being a Specialist such as a Character Animator, Versus Being a Generalist?

When I started working at Rainmaker, I was told that they didn't have the luxury of hiring specialists and that everyone was expected to be generalists.

My first task was texturing teeth. I had no idea what I was doing and I nearly lost my job. No kidding. Fortunately for me, as talented as the artists at Rainmaker are, I learned what generalists generally lack are decent animation skills.

Animation is just such a demanding discipline. Movement is something that is either right or wrong, not much room for artists who can “kind of animate.”

That said, there is nothing wrong with building your skills across the board. I don't agree with the idea that artists can't learn how to script, for example.

  2. I too like being a generalist, but I couldn't agree more: you just CAN'T kind of animate. Either you do it right or your don't. So it's better if you're a good animator AND be a generalist in my opinion. :)

  3. I think its good to become a generalist at some point. I used to have my own animation studio and I think the only reason I was able to handle the projects and manage my team was because I knew what I should expect from each team members, and I knew how to solve their problem.
But the bad thing about it is you'll get too busy solving your teammates problems or completing a project. This actually made me either be too tired to work on my animation skills or not have time at all.
So if you believe that you like to learn everything about animation production well its not a bad idea, and you'd always know what your teammates are talking about actually.
But I think today most companies are looking for specialists, if am not mistaking, because they want you to be the best at the job they are giving you. This saves their time for revising a scene or a character or whatever...

  4. In my opinion the artist benefits a lot of being a generalist. Learning a little of everything and thus being able to contribute in diferent parts of a project is a great thing, obviously. The ideal hire is a generalist that is really great at one skill.
The question is: can someone study deeply an art form like animation and still have the will to learn other areas?

  6. Why would a company place you in a situation where your skills would lead you to almost losing your job?

  7. I would say for the majority of studios in the world, being more of a generalist is a smart way to go. BUT, for the really high end animation studios, Pixar, etc., the animation standards are so high that it usually requires the artist to focus almost completely on animation.
But again, studying lighting, modelling, etc, can only help us to develop into more rounded artists.
