I want to share my experience,
this is my short film i will talk about :

Music was a very important role to the story ,
it is another character , music was built together with the shots , with the story with animation,

So first i did a storyboard of the whole story ,
based on that i started to compose the music , the flutes , the intro piano , and the electronic track ,
once i had a proxy version of them , i started to block the animation music as a guide to the length of each shot , then with this info now i went back to modify the music to fit it well with the key poses and i locked the beats and length, finally you can animate until the end , after that you finish the last details of the music based on the final piece.

Depending on how we use the music on a film , it can become the character.

awesome post once again mr Gilman! You are a mountain of knowledge sir :) And i agree on the importance of music on this beautiful thing we do, be it live action, or even more so, at times, in animation!

Great article about the music's role in animation. You took a lot of important points about this interesting topic.
Well, in my personal experience music plays an important role in animation, I always ask to the director about the music in the shots that I will animate, and I sometimes request him the track or a similar track with a similar intention that the director wants for the shot or sequence. Then I will import the track in my software(Maya) and start to animate inspired in the music, not necessarily in musical rhythm, but with feeling, depth and the sense that it inspires me.
It often works. But this is not a method, it's just my way to help me to understand and recreate the sense of what is happening in my shot or sequence.
...and talking about music in movies.... I really like the soundtracks of "The Schindler list"

great post thanks, i feel you on jaws my family is from where it was filmed and i grew up on those beaches and jumping off that bridge that he swims under to get the little kid.
